And, interestingly, has become one of my signature paintings. In 2017, when I had my first studio in Asheville at Trackside Studios, I also got my first solo show downtown Asheville at Mountain Madre. I had just seen an octopus while diving and was so inspired by them, I wanted to do the show entirely focusing on octopuses. Also, they would look fantastic with the Mexican cuisine of the restaurant.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI painted several octopuses and I can’t remember if I didn’t measure the space beforehand, or I simply was estimating the space. A week before the show, I went in and discovered I had SO much extra brick wall space to display on! And.... began to panic. I needed a crown jewel. A giant painting to anchor the show. I needed an idea....and one came. Octopuses dueling in the ocean. Mostly based on my imagination (as they are solitary animals and rarely photographed together,) this painting was created in a week, mostly at night as I was still working my day job. I was so pleased with how it came out, and it was a great exercise in working under pressure! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI was incredibly nervous for the show, as I always am (and back 9 years ago when I told people the theme of the show they did give me a “are you crazy?” kind of look.) Now octopuses have become much more mainstream which is wonderful! I was filled with support from friends, family, and supporters, and Hank found his forever home that night. The moment I came back from that trip, I knew I had to paint her. Achelois was one of the first octopuses painted, has deep meaning to me as I battle my alopecia struggles with Achelois meaning “she who washes away the pain.” She was showcased in my first all octopus art show in Asheville, and has become one of my signature paintings. She was also the first painting I put on the leggings. I adore working with color, and for some reason, I felt called to include both black and navy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eYears ago, I would have immediately dismissed this idea. The thought of “I couldn’t possibly do that” has turned into “why not?” When I started the painting, I wanted to include flowers because I was teaching a class with florals as the subject matter in a few weeks. I wanted to paint them pink, and again, with that punchy of a orange, I would have dismissed it in the past. But, I ignored the immediate negativity and just did what I wanted to do, and sometimes the coolest things happen! I love pushing the boundaries with color, color combinations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI would describe my style as Fauvism with its “use of intense, non-naturalistic color, and bold spontaneous brushwork.... the “wild beasts” broke with traditional representation to express emotion through pure color.” In addition to the roses, I included lilies because my grandfather called my grandmother “tiger lily,” and I wanted to add that as a sweet homage to them. Next, I used oils and oil bars to apply color. My media selection is often based on the scene being created or the personality of the elephant or herd of elephants depicted.
